Offered April 20 – June 8

Many of us making a home in the Salish Sea are thinking about spring planting, and with that comes the question – how much water do I have and will I have enough for all I want to grow?

Equinox has now come and gone again, and it’s that time of year – rainy spring inter-mingled with sunny, dry days. Bulbs are beginning at higher elevations to send up shoots, and at lower elevations, plum trees and crocuses are in full bloom. Such excitement!

With a changing climate, we can rely less on the consistency of spring precipitation patterns, yet we will likely receive another 200-300mm of rain before the seasonal drought sets in (we hope!) over the months of April, May and June (and possibly July if 2022 is a harbinger of any new normal).

If you have not already developed a plan, and taken steps to begin incrementally building in rain collection and storage, it really is likely one of the top priorities for a climate resilient Gulf Islands lifestyle. Along with conserving potable water use during the dry summer and fall, building in rainwater storage for outdoor uses can have an enormous impact on our freshwater resources, and our economy. Having enough water to house a diverse local population, and to invite tourism to the Gulf Islands depends on rainwater harvesting by everyone, including those with “piped” water from a water district.
