Rain Storage Incentives Change the Face of Drought

“Island gardeners” is a moniker that describes 1 in 2 Salt Springers, I’d say. And, seasonal drought is here to stay – perhaps even punctuated by spring or winter-time droughts here and there as our changing climate warms.

What can we do about drought?

Store rain for all outdoor uses!

If Salt Spring residents switch over to stored rainwater instead of pumped groundwater and treated water for gardens and outdoor washing – the island’s ecosystems (ie. watersheds) and freshwater resources will better handle climate change and remain resilient for future generations. Heck, we may even find that water utilities are capable of supporting new connections from their existing surface- and groundwater-licences.

[According to provincial legislation passed in 2016, all water system groundwater withdrawals must be licensed provincially.]

For the third year running, Transition Salt Spring is offering rebates to those who register their interest, and whose rain storage system parameters are eligible for these incentives.
